1938, by chance. A young scientist made PTFE. PTFE was initially used for gaskets and seals to prepare for the first time in the history of atom blasts.

PTFE is a carbon with a long chain enclosed by fluoride. Since it blocks other molecules from adhering, it is extremely slippery.

In 1944, Teflon has been trademarked. In order to adhere to PTFE pans, the pans are dipped into hydrochloric acid. The particular sticky material is a corporate secret held by Dupont. Then the PTFE is sprayed over and the temperatures are drastically increased to melt the PTFE to the surface.

People often wonder whether Teflon can be safely used. It’s an inert compound so it’s not toxic. The only time it is likely to breakdown is at temperatures of 500 degrees Fahrenheit. This is not normal cooking temperatures.
